Georgiou, Alexandra, Elementary School Math Studio Assistant
Alexandra Georgiou is a seasoned educator with over 20 years of experience, holding a K-6 Teaching Certificate from the State of Florida. She serves as a Math Studio teacher in the ACS schools, providing support to students ranging from 1st to 5th grade in their mathematical inquiries. Born and raised in Athens, she earned a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Thessaly. She then pursued a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership in the United States at Northeastern Illinois University. During her time in Chicago, she held various teaching positions and took pride in her role as a Master Teacher at a Learning Center serving low-income communities. Ms. Georgiou worked tirelessly to bridge the learning gap and develop a high-quality curriculum for her students. Additionally, she played a key role in supporting the organization through the accreditation process with the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
In 2010, Ms. Georgiou underwent a significant transition in her teaching career when she moved to Miami, Florida, to join an innovative Charter School employing a departmentalized teaching approach for elementary education. Focusing on mathematics, she discovered her passion and developed a profound love for teaching math. She expanded her skills by becoming a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Over the following years, she taught math across various grade levels, gaining a thorough understanding of the curriculum, and she was recognized as a High Impact Teacher in Mathematics in Florida.
She began offering support to new teachers in their roles as mathematics educators and continued to contribute by assuming the position of Mathematics Coordinator for the elementary school. With the support of her colleagues, she led the development of a vertically aligned curriculum, created pacing guides, and prepared practice materials for various topics and standardized tests.
During her tenure, she also coached upper elementary students who participated in various mathematics competitions. They achieved success in state competitions, Math Olympiads, as well as in the Perennial Math and Math Kangaroo international competitions. They even traveled to the National Finals for the Alpha Math Contest in California and MathCon in Chicago.
Alexandra prioritizes building strong student relationships, fostering open dialogue, and promoting critical thinking in her classroom. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time hiking in the countryside with her family, her dogs, and her cat.
